An abundant region, boasting some of Australia’s
pristine national parks, rainforests and waterfalls, combined with impressive historical buildings and
heritage throughout the wonderful country towns that make this region so special.
Food and wine is a delight – 14 wineries are found within the region. Also, a fantastic range of
restaurants and cafes to choose from.
Art and culture will be a highlight to discover, from an open air sculpture gallery in Walcha, New
England Regional Art Museum, Aboriginal Cultural centre and the Conservatorium of Music found in
Armidale.
Early settlement of the New England began around the early 1800’s. There are a vast number of
National Buildings to be seen throughout the district. Heritage is also a standout point, with the
Celtic Festival celebrated in Glen Innes as an annual event.
Uralla’s Working 1872 Brass and iron lace foundry (Australia’s oldest working foundry), McCrossin's
Mill and of course Uralla is well known for the Infamous Thunderbolt bush ranger. Tom Roberts Festival
is held biannually in Inverell to celebrate the works of this great artist, many paintings completed in
the Inverell District, including Newstead Station.
Recreation is enjoyed throughout many of the national parks in the region and also the Copeton
Waters state park. A great holiday experience from water skiing to fishing or just paddling around on
a canoe and enjoying the lakeside experience. Gem fossicking is also a well enjoyed passtime for many
within the Inverell and Glen Innes areas. Inverell is well known for the best sapphires found in the
world.
Education is well provided in the New England region, including the University of New England,
Conservatorium of Music and three independent boarding schools located in Armidale.
And of course, let’s not forget the shopping. A unique Boutique style of shopping is offered in all
towns that are situated in the region, including large shopping centres and franchise companies located
in Armidale and Inverell.
The New England is truly a lovely place to visit with many styles of accommodation to choose from
such as Boutique , Farmstay, B & B, motels, hotels and caravan parks. Not only a great place to
explore but the New England offers a wonderful country lifestyle that many people are now choosing to
enjoy.
